Walk: Traces of the Red Star Line in the city
Antwerp and the Red Star Line are intrinsically linked together. Millions of migrants arrived in Antwerp and then left. That left traces. The Red Star Line route focuses your attention on the traces they left behind and brings the stories back to life.
At the height of the Red Star Line’s activities, two ships departed weekly from Antwerp. Every week, almost 3,000 migrants made their way from Central Station to Rijnkaai. These migrants couldn’t believe their eyes but likewise the local population didn’t always know what to make of the streams of people in the street. The migration economy was booming. The Red Star Line had a huge presence in the city.
Today, the traces of this story have largely disappeared. However, the Red Star Line Museum is bringing them back to life. With this route, you can walk through the city and experience it as the migrants did. Just like them, you will leave from Central Station and finish at the Scheldt where the Red Star Line ships once set sail.
